From his start as a Chartered Accountant, Amit Hapani now leads Hylant’s India operations, where he blends deep financial expertise with strategic leadership in the captive insurance sector. He shares the rewards of building global teams and why this dynamic field is central to the future of corporate risk.

Describe your professional journey and how you became interested in the broader financial or insurance industries.

I began my career after completing a degree in Chartered Accountancy, joining as a financial specialist where I built strong foundations in financial modelling, forecasting, and month-end reporting.

I then accepted a rotation into a senior role that specialised in analytics-driven product and underwriting work. I am drawn to finance and insurance because they let me apply quantitative skills to real-world problems that protect customers and optimise business outcomes.

Provide a brief overview of your current role. What are your core responsibilities within the captive insurance industry?

As a Director of India Operations in Hylant, one of my core responsibilities is to ensure efficient management of our captive insurance companies. I lead a dedicated team of experienced Chartered Accountants who excel in their fields.

Together, we focus on the preparation of comprehensive monthly and quarterly financial statements, as well as the timely submission of quarterly and annual regulatory filings. In addition to financial reporting, I oversee the audit processes to ensure compliance and integrity in our operations. Education is also a significant aspect of my role; I aim to empower our clients with knowledge regarding captive insurance, helping them to understand the intricacies and benefits involved.

How did you get into the captive insurance sector? Was there a specific project or experience that led you here?

I stumbled upon the world of captive insurance through a job portal over 12 years ago. At that time, I was eager to learn something new, and I am thrilled to say that this field has truly exceeded my expectations.

Captive insurance became a blessing for me, offering endless opportunities for growth and development. Each day presents new challenges and learning experiences, which keep me engaged and motivated. The dynamic nature of the industry and the chance to continuously expand my knowledge are what make it so rewarding.

Looking back, what has been a particularly rewarding project or achievement in your career?

One of my proudest achievements has been earning the trust of my colleagues and leadership, especially through Hylant’s decision to empower me to establish an independent team in India. Having previously built teams across multiple organisations, this opportunity marked a significant milestone in my career.

It was not just about operational expansion; it was about being entrusted with Hylant’s values, culture, and client commitment in a new market.

Contributing to that mission from India, and helping shape our presence here, has been both a personal and professional highlight.

Who or what has significantly influenced your understanding of captive insurance?

I learned captive insurance through a mix of hands-on projects, mentorship from my senior colleagues, underwriters, and actuaries, structured courses from leading captive educators, and active engagement with industry associations, which together gave me technical depth and practical judgement for managing and governing captives.

What is your impression of the captive insurance industry? What aspects of it do you find most promising?

The captive insurance industry is mature, strategically important, and increasingly central to corporate risk management. Strategic risk financing is something I find
most promising.

What key trends or developments have you noticed in the captive industry recently, and how do you see them shaping the sector’s future?

The captive insurance industry is undergoing rapid transformation, driven by emerging risks, regulatory shifts, and technological innovation. Looking ahead, I see captives becoming even more central to global risk strategies.

We will likely see more cross-border formations, deeper collaboration with reinsurers and insurtechs, and broader use of captives to support strategic initiatives. It is a sector that is not just growing - it is redefining how organisations think about risk.

What do you find most enjoyable about working in this field, and what challenges or opportunities have you observed for new professionals?

Working in captive insurance offers a unique blend of creativity, strategic impact, and professional growth - but newcomers must navigate a steep learning curve and a niche talent landscape to thrive.

How do you continue to develop your knowledge in this specialised industry?

I stay sharp in the captive insurance industry by combining ongoing education, active networking, and hands-on experience - all of which help me adapt to emerging risks, regulatory changes, and innovation.

What are your aspirations for your career within the captive insurance industry?

My career aspirations within the captive insurance industry centre around becoming a strategic leader who helps organisations unlock the full potential of alternative risk financing. A critical part of that journey involves deepening my expertise in financial reporting.

Preparing financial statements for captives requires a strong grasp of statutory accounting principles, regulatory requirements across domiciles, and the unique risk-retention structures that captives employ.

For those exploring a career path in captive insurance, what advice would you share based on your experience?

For those exploring a career in captive insurance, my biggest piece of advice is to embrace the complexity and lean into continuous learning. This industry sits at the intersection of finance, risk management, and regulatory strategy. Preparing financial statements for captives has been especially rewarding for me. It is about understanding the financial heartbeat of the captive.

You get to work with statutory accounting principles, navigate domicile-specific regulations, and analyse how retained earnings and surplus levels impact strategic decisions.

I also encourage new professionals to build relationships early because the captive community is tight-knit and incredibly supportive. Do not be afraid to ask questions - this is a field that values curiosity and cross-disciplinary thinking.

Have any mentors or colleagues played a particularly helpful role in your professional development since you began working in the captive space?

Absolutely - mentorship has been a cornerstone of my development in the captive insurance industry, especially during my time at Hylant. Early on, I had the privilege of working alongside seasoned professionals who guided me through the technical aspects of captive formation and financial reporting.

Their mentorship was instrumental in helping me connect regulatory compliance with strategic decision-making, particularly when preparing financial statements and analysing surplus levels.

Hylant’s collaborative culture also played a big role; I have learned so much from colleagues across disciplines, from actuaries and underwriters to tax and audit experts.
