Sompo has named Nicholas Walsh as independent non-executive chairman of the board of directors for Sompo International Holdings (SIH).
Walsh takes over from James Shea, who was recently appointed CEO of Sompo P&C while retaining his role as CEO and executive director of SIH.
Walsh has been an independent non-executive director at SIH since June 2022 and previously spent 42 years at AIG in a range of leadership roles.
His past positions include vice chairman of AIG Property and Casualty, executive vice president of AIG, and head of AIG’s international general insurance operations.
He also served on the boards of McGill Global Solutions, Jardine Lloyd Thompson, and currently sits on the board of Endurance Worldwide Insurance, a Sompo subsidiary.
Shea says: “Nic is a highly respected leader with more than 50 years of experience in insurance and his expertise has been invaluable to us since he first joined our Board three years ago.
“Nic’s new appointment comes at an exciting time for Sompo as we continue to expand our business around the world.”
In addition, Sompo has appointed Monica Cramér Manhem and Yoshihiro Uotani as non-executive directors to the SIH board.
Cramér Manhem joined the board of SIIE, an SIH subsidiary, in 2023 and previously held the role of CEO at SiriusPoint International.
She began her career at Sirius International in 1985 and served on its board from 2014 to 2022.
Uotani is group chief risk officer (CRO) and senior executive vice president at Sompo Holdings, and has worked across Germany, the UK, the US and Japan.
Shea comments: “Monica brings with her broad expertise across underwriting, communications, analytics, strategic and regulatory topics and is a respected industry leader.
“As Group CRO, Uotani-san’s extensive knowledge will help us to navigate a complex and rapidly moving global risk landscape as we continue to take our business from strength to strength.”
