Bermuda launches captive internship to nurture local talent

KPMG Bermuda, in partnership with the Bermuda Captive Network, has launched a US$30,000 scholarship and internship programme to strengthen the island’s domestic captive insurance workforce.

The initiative was announced at the 2025 Bermuda Captive Conference, held this week at the Hamilton Princess.

The programme combines financial assistance with practical industry training for Bermudian students.

Each selected participant receives a US$20,000 cash scholarship and up to US$10,000 in in-kind support, including access to industry events, professional mentoring and development opportunities.

The internship includes a rotation through KPMG’s audit, tax, and advisory departments, followed by a secondment at a Bermuda-based captive insurer. Participants will gain practical experience across underwriting, claims, compliance, and finance functions.

The programme attracted 74 applications, with Kiara Burcher and Taj Lowery selected as the first recipients.

Burcher studies mathematics and actuarial science at the University of Western Ontario, while Lowery is pursuing enterprise regulation and business administration at St John’s University.

Speaking at the conference, Minister of Economy and Labour Jason Hayward said the programme supports Bermuda’s workforce development strategy.

Industry leaders noted the global shortage of skilled professionals in the captive sector.

Meanwhile, KPMG Bermuda partner Bron Turner said developing local talent is important for sustaining Bermuda’s leadership in the global captive market.

The Bermuda Captive Network plans to continue the programme, with applications reopening in 2026.
