The Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA) issued eight new international insurer licences between July and September 2026, according to the Insurance Managers Association of Cayman (IMAC).
The quarter’s licences comprise one Class B(i) and seven Class B(iii) licences, including three new portfolio insurance companies (PICs).
The additions take the number of new international insurer licences issued in 2026 to 28, following 20 in the first half of the year. CIMA has a further 11 applications under review, and a number of applications have been approved in principle, including one new insurance manager.
Cayman is home to 720 Class B, C and D insurance companies, representing approximately US$62 billion in premiums written and US$203 billion in total assets. Since the start of 2026, premiums written have increased by US$11 billion and total assets by US$27 billion.
IMAC put the number of Class B, C and D insurance companies at 721 at the end of the second quarter, with approximately US$61 billion in premiums and US$190 billion in total assets.
James Trundle, chair of IMAC, says: “Cayman’s international insurance industry continues to demonstrate resilience, stability and sustained growth. The steady increase in new licensees, alongside significant growth in premiums written and total assets, reflects the continued confidence that international businesses place in our jurisdiction.”
Trundle adds: “With a healthy pipeline of applications and continued interest from international markets, we are optimistic about the industry’s outlook for the remainder of 2026.”
The Cayman Captive Forum will take place from 1 to 3 December 2026 at the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.
